According to Google Scholar, this paper, while done in the 90′s, has been cited almost 500 times in later works. To the scientific community, this means the results are thought credible, reliable, reproducible, and significant.

Let me clarify this for you:

Nobody said this study had anything to do with orientation or proved that homophobic men are actually gay. The study points to the aggressive behavior as a backlash for the shame they feel for just such an innocuous sexual response. THAT is the point. Human sexuality is complex, but those homophobic men have been socialized to disregard all complexity and feel ashamed of, or threatened by it. Their sexual response proves it is complicated, but the complexity is ignored.

They cannot embrace that notion of complexity as women who consume gay porn, or even straight men who watch lesbian porn. They cannot embrace that complexity because homoeroticism is strictly forbidden in cultures that uphold the male archetype of “head of house” or that embrace hypermasculinity as a worthy element.

The study makes manifest, the cognitive dissonance in the homophobic mind.
