before they cast their final curses, after all that happened, Harry was actually trying to get Voldemort to mend himself back together

HOLY SHIT WHAT

He had hope for his enemy, because he knew how alike they were, how similar their life had been, but knew that he himself had chosen to be good by virtue of self-reflection and guidance from those who would not allow him to lose himself. He tried to do that for his enemy. His enemy made his choice. Harry had done all he could. Harry reaffirmed his own character.

As much as Rowling borrowed, reorganized, and flat out stole from myth and fiction, she put it together very, very nicely.
